-- Reviews by the Famous and well Known
All the glory years of Sounds come rushing back; rock writing at its best.

He takes no prisoners but he is also completely honest which has to be admired. When we met there was an instant bond because we’re both nice, regular guys.
Dale Winton, Television Presenter

Garry combines honesty with a real understanding of showbusiness and a genuine concern for the people in it.

Garry never pulls his punches, he’s naughty and great fun.

I first met Garry Bushell at one of ITV’s An Audience With shows nearly twenty years ago. I have met him since at boxing bouts, football matches, rock gigs and film sets. Wherever the place, be it a West End nightclub or the West Ham Working Man’s Club, he has never been any different. He doesn’t put on airs and graces. He doesn’t toady to people. He is always down to earth and on the ball.
Garry is not like most journalists. To start with he’s as straight as a dye. He doesn’t set out to turn people over and when he interviews you, it’s about you and not about him. I trust him, and I am not alone. Garry has a good name amongst many great actors, comedians and rock stars because they appreciate his honesty, intelligence and humour. When a performance is bad, he will rightly pan it but when it’s good he sings its praises from the roof-tops.
Most television critics you suspect don’t watch much telly. Many are happy to go for obvious jokes and weak puns. They slag off everything and everyone, and then they hide behind their column, rarely facing the people whose reputations they have besmirched. Garry Bushell is different. He cares about TV, as he cares about music and the British film industry. He has a passion for it. Garry was banging a drum for variety and talent shows long before Simon Cowell proved that television executives were wrong to ignore him. He does it with great humour too. No lesser authority than Bob Monkhouse said of Garry: “His gags are great and his writing style is so rich with observation, knowledge and wit that I marvel at how he can maintain the standard.”
The Sun has never been the same since he left it.
If you ever watched Garry’s late night Bushell On The Box show on ITV you will have been amazed by the quality of guests he had – me, Bob, Barbara Windsor, Bradley Walsh, Paul O’Grady, William Roache, Dale Winton, Bobby Davro, Jim Davidson, Vic & Bob, Brian Conley, Penn & Teller. He had better bookings than Des O’Connor. You will be even more amazed to learn that we all did it for free.
Not only stars either. The likes of Roy ‘Pretty Boy’ Shaw and Lenny McLean were also made welcome on the Bushell sofa, along with Page 3 girls, Gladiators, footballers and the country’s funniest comedians.
He had bands playing in his back garden – one week it would be the Drifters, the next punk rockers the Blood. Chas & Dave performed at his St George’s Day party and Iron Maiden left messages on the show’s answer machine.
That he still has close friends today that he made on Sounds thirty-odd years ago gives you an insight into the affection in which the man is held by the people he wrote about be they Mods, punks and hooligans or international rock stars.
There’s an expression proper East Londoners have for people like Garry Bushell: he’s one of yer own. There is no higher praise.

Love him or loathe him, you can’t ignore him. The outspoken and often controversial journalist has ruffled a few feathers in his time. But this book promises to reveal more about the man behind the headlines. It might change your opinion of him.

The only connection between Gary Bushell and I is that we've both run newspaper columns called Bizarre. That aside, Bushell on the Rampage provides a shocking account of the man's career in the media. Reading this book is like riding a literary roller-coaster; you continually feel the urge to stop and catch your breath. Cramming so much high-octane activity into one life almost defies belief, but he's done it and I suspect that there's a lot more fuel left in his tank. You may love Gary Bushell or hate him, but by God you certainly can't ignore him.

“BUSHELL ON THE RAMPAGE” - GARRY BUSHELL (Apex)
By Neil Daniels.
Before Garry Bushell made a name for himself as tabloid journalist and TV personality, he was a writer for Sounds from 1978 to 1982 where he penned numerous on the road tales and interviewed many of the biggest rock bands of the day. He was involved in the signing of Twisted Sister to Secret Records in the UK before Atlantic got hold of them in the States. Bushell also wrote the first official Iron Maiden bio ‘Running Free’, which now goes for a lot of money on Amazon. A controversial figure, Bushell spills the beans in a very entertaining manner with many laugh out loud moments. He has never been one to shy away from the truth and has often rubbed people up the wrong way. He’s certainly lived a colourful life: he has championed many working class causes; he was integral in the Oi scene of the seventies and is to many punk fans the “Godfather of punk” having discovered The Cockney Rejects and The Buzz Kids and he met/interviewed the likes of Ozzy, Ritchie Blackmore and Hanoi Rocks for Sounds. His own punk band The Gonads have been touring for 30 years now so Bushell’s working days are not simply spent typing in his home office. His candid book involves sex, gangsters/crime, rock ‘n’ roll, punk, politics, drugs and celebrities. To the mainstream he is perhaps best known for his TV column Bushell On The Box and for his many TV appearances. This book is filled to the brim with humorous anecdotes. Although he is certainly not to everyone’s tastes, ‘Bushell On The Rampage’ is a well-written and lively book that will certainly appeal to rock fans of the late seventies and eighties.

-- Readers Comments
An honest account as Garry takes us through the high and low points in his life.
I particularly liked the grammar school stories as they evoked memories of eccentric teachers at my own grammar school. Garry’s description of his close relatives brought these characters to life. Most of us have had a ‘Nin’ in our lives who was always there for us and we adore in return.
Almost everyone likes to hear show biz stories, especially those who portray celebrities in a different light to the one usually presented to the public.
Give us the goss Garry! Look forward to your next book.
