-- Reviews by the Famous and well Known
My time spent at Macclesfield Town was very special, not only for the success and trophies we won, but also the great players that worked under Gill Prescott and I.
The spirit at the club was fantastic! We took that onto the field of play and the terraces. I must mention Arthur Jones who backed me in everyway as a chairman and friend, without his support we would not be a League club today.
The loyal fans of Macclesfield will surely enjoy using this book and of course with that a lot of memories will come to mind.
Sammy McIlroy MBE, Macclesfield Town Football Club (Manager 1993-2000) - Written the Foreword
~
In the mid 90s Macclesfield Town was the most successful football club in the non-league pyramid. Sammy McIlroy built on a platform created by his predecessor Peter Wragg to lead the club to two GM Vauxhall Conference titles in 1995 and 1997 and an FA Trophy win at Wembley in 1996. The second of the two Conference titles resulted in the realisation of the late Arthur Jones’ vision of the Silkmen playing in the Football League and twelve months later the Silkmen were playing League games at Maine Road, Deepdale and the Britannia Stadium. We were living the dream.
As I write these notes the club has just completed its 12th season as a member of that August competition, a tremendous achievement for a small club that lives in the shadow of many more illustrious neighbours. But the Silkmen have a long and proud history that stretches back to 1874, a history that has had its fair share of triumphs and disappointments but has always been marked by the commitment and support of the community for its local football team.
In the pubs and bars of Macclesfield and in the virtual world of the internet message boards, supporters often test their knowledge of the team they love. Many are encyclopaedic in grasp of the history of the team and the charismatic individuals who have contributed over the years to the unfolding saga.
This book compiled by Chris Cowlin and his colleagues, aided and abetted by Geoff Knights, will bring an extra dimension to those debates and arguments. It’s a quiz book with depth and it’s focused directly at the Silkmen and the men who’ve made history at the Moss Rose. Test yourself on your knowledge of Macclesfield Town and enjoy!
